my wife and i are planning a trip to italy in april of 2011. given our work schedules we are only able to spend one week (saturday-saturday). we would like to visit one major city or a day or perhaps a night and spend several days in cinque terre. any advice to which city and where to fly into and leave from?

Fly into Rome and out of Milan or the other way around and visit CT before going to Rome.
Sat. - Arrive
Sun. - Rome
Mon. - Rome
Tues. - Rome
Wed. - CT
Thurs. - CT
Fri. - CT/Milan
Sat. - Depart

From what you said you will be leaving Saturday and returning the following Saturday. You could fly into Roma, Pisa, or Milano and home from Pisa. This would give you 6 days to visit and travel between destinations. However, you might have a problem with jetlag and one more day could be effected.
