Transportation to Lake Como

We want to travel from Kempten in southern Germany to Varenna on Lake Como -- preferably by train. It appears complicated. Has anyone made a similar trip? What's the most direct route?

Jeri,

That's not an overly complicated trip, but it's going to be a bit of a long day.

The simplest and quickest route I could find (using an arbitrary date) was a train departing Kempten (Allgau) at 08:43, arriving Varenna at 18:23 (time 9H:40M, two changes in Zürich and Milano, reservations compulsory). That's the route I'd choose, as some of the other trains on that route have as many as seven changes!

Each of the three legs is no more than about 3.5 hours, which is reasonable. The layover in Zürich is the longest, but in Milan it's only about half an hour.

Happy travels!
