Car rental companies in Italy.....

Hello. My husband and I are going to Italy in a week and want to rent a car to drive around the Tuscany /Umbria region. Any suggestions on companys to use or not to use?

one tip is to pick up your car outside of a big region. Stay someplace smaller, even a hilltown, and take the train from your arrival city to your destination. Its not impossible to drive in larger cities, but why do it if you don't have to?

Also be sure to look up "Italy ZTL" so you understand where cars are prohibited (and where you'll get very expensive tickets). And I would strongly recommend bringing a GPS.

Thanks Mike. I was planning on picking up the car in Orvieto and returning in Siena. Should I change the drop off location?

Siena is not as big and congested as major cities like Rome or Florence. Just do a little searching on the web to make sure you know what the ZTL signs look like and to see where the zones are in Siena.

We rented a car while in Italy alst November to tour the tuscan country side.
We booked the car through Hertz here in Canada before we went over. I had a coupon for 10% off.

We picked up in Siena and dropped off in Oriveta -- relativly no problems. These are small cities.

While in France we picked up/dropped off the a rental in down town paris. HUGE mistake. crazy driving down town, luckily my husband is a great drive.

One tip - bring/rent a GPS unit. We brought some maps from home for our time spent touring the countrt side of Frnace, but they weren't detailed enough. It is hard to know at home how detailed a map is until you are acutally drive in europe.

So, when we rented our car in Italy, we gave in and rented the GSP unit with our car. Totally worth the extra money because we were pretty much NEVER lost. Compaired to the many times we were lost/made a wrong turn in France.

Have fun!
