I will be driving to Venice from Florence, with my family in a Peugeot Van, and checking in one of the hotels in Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, could anyone please advise what sort of parking arrangement is available for us during our stay in Venice. Thank you
You cannot drive on the Islands of Venice. It is pedestrian only. You will want to find a parking garage on the mainland and take the train in.
Actually I wouldn't consider the Tronchetto Parking Garages on the mainland. It's actually located on the man-made island of Tronchetto which is located across the causeway from the mainland...right at Venice Islands.
If you won't need the vehicle after Venice just turn it in. If you are staying in Venice for a while it may be cheaper to turn in an rent again at the end of your stay, since you won't need it while in Venice.
Assuming you still need to vehicle after Venice and you won't be staying a very long time in Venice, there are parking garages in Venice proper (sort of).
Just before you get to Piazzale Roma there is a parking garage. There is also a prking garage at Tronchetto. Both are across the causeway from the mainland and both have vaporetto stops.
I haven't parked a car in Venice for a very, very long time but I think the prices are around 20-25 euros per day.
Google prking in Venice and you'll get a bunch of info.
Parking the car in a garage in Mestre will be cheaper (about 6E/day) and the train in to Venezia SL is about 1.10E.
We parked in the Tronchetto parking garage for several nights as we were heading to Tuscany from here. Don't recall what the price was as it was several years back. We had a car with an actual trunk and had packed backpacks in advance to take into Venice. We did not want to be getting into our trunk once we were in the garage. Leave nothing in sight. We had no problems when we returned to our car. Our next visits to Venice were at the end of our trips so we dropped off cars either at Piazzale Roma and hopped on the vaporetti or dropped at the airport and took a water taxi into Venice. Just pack light as you don't want to be lugging big suitcases around esp. in Venice with all the bridges!
Thank you for all your excellent suggestions! All are Very helpful indeed
