Communicating back home

We are travelling to Greece and Italy in a few weeks. Leaving three children at home is making me nervous. What is the cheapest and easiest way to communicate with them. Not sure if there are internet cafes around or not Don't really want to take our own computer. Has anyone got skype on their Ipod touch??

Email is probably the best way. I emailed a lot with my iPhone but be careful if you are using your cell phone because the international data plans can get spendy in a hurry. You will find lots of internet cafes throughout Italy. If you can find a wifi hot spot your iTouch would also be a good bet. You could also purchase an international calling card and use that to call home.

Steve...I'm a little confused. Here you say you use an Itouch for Skype and email, but under the thread "Iphone," you say you use an unlocked Iphone.

You use both? Isn't that somewhat redundant or is there a benefit to having both?

Marianne,

The cheapest and easiest way to communicate that I've found so far is via text message. Although these are only short messages, I can send them any time (no worries about the time difference) and the recipients receive the messages when convenient. There's a charge for sent texts, but received texts are usually free.

This is supplemented by E-mail when I have access to a Net Café. I'll be travelling with a Netbook this year, which will allow more frequent and easier access to the Net and E-mail.

It would help to know if you currently have a Cell phone plan, and if so which network you're with? Besides text the other advantage of having a Cell phone is that one can make short voice calls every so often, which is nicer and more personal. Your kids would probably enjoy the novelty of a short call from you while you're in Rome or Athens.

To answer your last question, I have an IPod Touch but don't have Skype. My IPod is one of the earlier generations, and I don't think it's capable of using Skype (however, the Netbook is certainly capable).

Happy travels!
