My Neighbor heard on a radio program the August is not a good time to travel to Italy since the Italians go on Holiday in August. Shops close, cities are crowded et al. I am planning to leave Thursday so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I believe your neighbor is correct.
The big cities are not very crowded because everyone is escaping the heat by heading to the beaches on the coast. Some stores and restaurants will be closed but there will be plenty that are open. You will not be wandering through a ghost town in search of a restaurant! The sights will be open but be careful to plan around closing days - Sundays at the Vatican Museum & August 15 and the majority of the museums on Mondays in Rome & Florence.
You'll be fine. Have a great time.
We are in Italy right now and its wonderful. From Aug. 1 to 6 we were in Rome, now we're in Sorrento and on the 13th go to Siena for a week. We have had no problems with shops, restaurants or overcrowding. An added bonus is that everything is on sale - smile!
We just returned and found the crowds were not bad this year. We were in the SOrrento area but drove the entire Amalfi drive with no traffic at all.
We encountered only the usual Siesta afternoon closings.
