We will be arriving in Rome and staying 2 nights. We are planning on visiting Lucca, Florence, and the Cinque Terre. What would be the best route and also is it possible to stay in Lucca and day trip to Florence? Thanks.
Most efficient route would be Rome, Florence, Lucca, Cinque Terre and then back to Rome (or departure city) at end of trip. If departing from Rome, it would be difficult or impossible to get back to the airport in time on your departure day. Trip from Lucca to Florence by train is about 1.5 hours each way, so it is doable as a day trip. As much as I like Lucca, Florence has so much to see and do that it deserves more time than a day trip allows, and I would suggest a minimum of 1 night (preferably 2 nights) if you've never visited Florence before.
