First Trip to Europe

At the interesting age of 55, I will be taking my first trip to Europe. I will be in Torino for 7 nights because by daughter is doing a semester abroad in nearby Vinovo. My question, should I rent a car? How practical is it to think that I can take side trips to Milan and even Monoco? It all looks so close on the map. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to go to Milan, take the train. I'm not sure how practical Monaco would be as a day trip, but I'd still take the train.

Torino to Monaco is a mean three hours each way by car, maybe more depending on the traffic going down the hill into Monaco.

If you just want to drive somewhere, Chamonix is only a couple of hours away.

Kathy,

As this is your first trip to Europe, I'd suggest pre-reading the Guidebook Europe Through The Back Door to begin with. That will provide you with information and "skills" to travel well in Europe. Pay special attention to the "Rail Skills" chapter.

For such a short trip, I'd suggest using trains for travel between cities. Trains are fast, run often and it's usually a very relaxing ride (no traffic worries).

A few things to note about driving in Italy. First, you'll require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which must be used in conjunction with your home D.L. Driver's can be fined on the spot for failing to produce one, and although this doesn't happen often it's a good idea to be prepared. A GPS unit (along with a good Map) are advisable.

Secondly, many towns in Italy are increasingly using Zona Traffico Limitato areas to reduce traffic in the city centres. Driver's passing through one of the automated Cameras can expect one or more €100+ tickets in the mail several months after they return home. Florence is especially "thick" with Cameras.

Travel from Torino to Monaco by train will involve at least 2 changes if travelling by train (Cuneo, Ventimiglia). The trip is about 4 hours by train each way, so probably about the same by car, so not really practical for a "day trip".

Happy travels!
