401st Anniversary of Bernini's bust of Pope Paul V

Rick Steves travelers know Bernini as the architect and decorator of their favorite Italian churches and fountains, with his distinctive wiggly columns and stretchy domes, but before he was known for that, Gian Lorenzo Bernini was considered the best portrait sculptor in Europe.

This summer 401 years ago Bernini sculpted a bust of Pope Paul V that recently came into the possession of the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and there's a brief video victory lap by their director worth watching here:

As I was just searching around now I see that in the year or two before the Getty acquired this piece the online education company Khan Academy had been covering Bernini, also producing some interesting videos.

From the video description:

"Sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini was only 23 years old when he was commissioned to carve a marble bust of Pope Paul V. Universally admired for his talent, he would later be appointed as the architect in charge of Saint Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican; gaining fame throughout Europe as one of the greatest artists of his time. Learn more about this masterpiece with Timothy Potts, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle, Director of the J. Paul Getty Museum."
