Hi
We are a family of 3 adults and planning a trip mid-May 2024. We have booked our hotels and apartments with free cancellations back in Dec. 2023. At this point we are hesitant to book our flights and make final decisions about our trip because of farmer protests going on in several countries. We do not hear too much updates from the news regarding what’s happening. Any input or feedbacks are very much appreciated.
I haven’t heard anything about any farmer protests. Where are they exactly?
I would not change my plans if I were you.
There were some farmer protests in Brussels last Monday, concentrated in the area of the European headquarters. Some access roads to that part of Brussels were temporarily closed as well as two metro stations. Access to the airport was temporarily blocked by the farmers. By four in the afternoon everything was back to normal.
I changed my road driving home, around two o'clock, from west of Brussels towards east, mainly to avoid traffic jams in town. That was all the "nuisance" I experienced.
I think it is difficult/impossible to predict what will happen in May, because it mainly depends on political negotiations and concessions made by Europe as well as at the local levels of government.
I am not really following protests in other countries, but as they are directed at government, I would suppose they mainly take place in the country capitals, and Brussels of course, for Europe.
Whatever occurs, you can work around it. Do you have travel insurance? It often needs to be booked within a certain number of days of the first deposit you make on the trip.
But four countries in four weeks would give me pause. More long-distance travel means more opportunity for disruption.
On this trip we are planning to arrive by Air in Brussels and stay for 5 nights, do day trips to Bruges/Antwerp, possibly a day trip to Amsterdam, and add day trip to Cologne- all of which will be by train. Brussels is where I’m very concerned due to the farmer protests. Can someone suggest any other city to stay before heading to Munich by train? Any suggestion/ input is greatly appreciated.
You could stay around the Brussels North station. I cannot see how farmer protests would impact that zone.
When farmers come to Brussels, they tend to come with their tractors, thus using the roads, not the train stations.
Why would you do a day trip to Cologne from Brussels, as the next leg to Munich would go via Cologne anyway?
However, considering your concerns and the cities you want to visit, I would suggest to go straight from Brussels Airport to Antwerp (direct train) and do a day trip to Bruges from there. After spending some time in Antwerp itself, I would proceed to Amsterdam and then to Munich, with or without a stop in Cologne. Of course, my itinerary includes a few more hotel changes.
Considering European elections are on June 9, by mid-May any issues with farmers may already been settled, or, alternatively, further protests would be more effective after the elections.

Thank you so much for your input. Yes this would be a good option.
