We will be staying in Italy for 4 Nights after our cruise. We disembark in Civitavecchia Port Italy. We will be flying out of FCO Airport. We've visited all the main sites in Rome on previous trips. We are unsure whether to make Civitavecchia our home base or stay in a town closer to the airport. Our goal is to visit towns nearby. Which area has more interesting towns close by to visit? Thank you.
Since it sounds like you’re not interested in Rome, I would take the train to another area and enjoy it for three nights (be near the airport the night before you leave).
1.5 hours, you could stay in Florence and enjoy Florence, plus a lot of day trips from there. Or would you rather stay in a smaller city?
Thank you so much for your reply.
Civitavecchia doesn't have much worth staying for several days. Florence or Naples were my first two thoughts. If you haven't been to Naples then it may be worth the experience as it is different from any city I've ever been and the history right back to the Greeks is amazing. You'll also be able to do daytrips to places like Pompeii and Herculaneum which were highlights for us.
Thank you so much for your response. We have been to Naples, Pompeii, Amalfi area.
( Positano, Capri, Sorrento, Ravello) So we are looking for quaint towns to explore from a home base that is an hour from FCO Airport. We initially thought Civitavecchia might work for us as a home base. But we may make our home base closer to FCO airport and venture out from there.
Thank you again.

like a small bnb ran by an italian (ivano) and finnish woman (terhi) married couple with couple accomodations. outside of rome in zagarolo. he does tours, can drop you off at train station, she offers family dinner meals with conversations and learning some history at the dinner table, even a cooking class on site.
just some off the beaten path areas not many tourists stay but lots to see and do. enjoy & have fun
