4 Nights in Sorrento and 3 Nights in Rome - Need itinerary help!

Hi all, you were such a big help with the first leg of my trip, I'm hoping for some help with the rest of the trip.

We're leaving from Florence by train on a Sunday for Sorrento.
With four nights in Sorrento we will visit Capri, tour Amalfi coast and Pompeii.
Possible trip to ancestoral village of San Gennaro de Vesuvio if it can be combined with the Amalfi Coast or Pompei. (May be too expensive and time consuming)
Since some of our activities are weather related, we are not scheduling anything here in advance

We are leaving Sorrento by train on a Thursday for Rome.
We will be staying three nights and flying home from Rome on Sunday morning.
In Rome we wil be visiting the Vatican, ancient Rome, and other sites.

Sometime during our trip we would also like to visit Naples to visit the National Archaeological Museum.

My questions are:

When would be the best, most efficient time to visit Naples?
1- visit on the ride from Florence to Sorrento since we have to change trains in Naples (may not be enough time for a quality visit).
2-combine Pompei in the morning and Naples in the afternoon on a day trip from Sorrento (eliminates having to store luggage in Naples).
3- visit Naples on the way from Sorrento to Rome (takes time away from Rome).

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Two years ago, staying in Sorrento, we visited Pompeii and Naples city/Archaeological Museum on 2 separate days. To fit in both on one day would've involved hit-and-run visits for us, and both sights are worth a fair amount of time, if you have it.

We had a full week in Rome and still had lots on our "To Do & See" list when we left, so 2+ days won't let you see everything in Rome anyway. You could argue that that means you need to devote as much time as you can to Rome, not sparing a moment elsewhere, or you could argue that since you're not going to see everything anyway, devoting some extra time elsewhere isn't a problem.

My initial thought is visit Pompeii on a day trip from Sorrento, then catch the Naples museum on your way to Rome. You could store your bags at the museum, taking them with you by taxi.

I would do it on the way to Sorrento as you have allowed so little time for Rome (I'm curious why that is?) and it hardly makes sense to go all the way back to Naples on a day trip after you've already passed right through there. The museum is closed on Tuesdays so you'd have to do that either on Monday or Wednesday.

You will end up with 3 days in Sorrento, and I think you may be a little overscheduled already what with trying to fit in an Amalfi Coast tour, Capri, Pompei and Sorrento itself. Don't underestimate the amount of time Pompei can take: it's an enormous site that we didn't fully cover in our 5-hour visit.

I would do it in the afternoon/evening after Pompeii in the morning. This eliminates the worry of luggage storage.
