4 nights from Milan - Lake Como / Florence ?

We have 4 nights at the start of our trip. We land in Milan 5/11/19 in the morning and will be going to Rome on 05/15/19. We have a couple of options of what to do, and would appreciate some advice. One idea is to go to the Lake Como area for 4 nights, and then on to Rome. Or we could do 2-3 nights in Lake Como and 1-2 nights in Florence. We haven't been to Lake Como and we weren't sure if there was enough to do, where to stay (I read the RS rec for Varenna), where to eat, etc.

thanks for the help. SY from Texas

What do you want to do?

Where have you been in Italy?

I will recommend first 4 nights in Varenna. Take the lake boat over to Bellagio or Menaggio or both. Bored? take the train into Milan for the day. Hourly trains that are pretty cheap. Too short amount of time to split it up with 2 nights on Lake Como and 2 nights in Florence. Too little time to enjoy either.

We have been to Florence several times, and enjoy going there. We just haven't been to the Lake Como area before, and from the RS guide it seemed that you could do it in less than 3 days.

We always like to have somewhere to chill out for a few days after our transatlantic flights to adjust to jet lag and just start the trip relaxed. In 2014 we started our trip in Bellagio for 4 nights at Borgo Le Terrazze. It was sublime. There are gardens and villas to visit, you can ferry around the lake to all the different villages, and then we had one day to just chill out at their pool with ridiculous views of the alps. It was perfection. So much so, that we are going back next month to start our trip at the very same place for three nights this time.

You could also take a cooking class at Il Camminetto in Varenna.
