4 hour layover at Fiumincino airport in Rome, enough time??!

So I should have a 4 hour layover in Rome coming up, my flight arrives around 12:00pm and we fly out at 4:00pm. Do I have enough time to do anything in Rome other than walk around the airport? It would be nice to go see a bit of Rome, but I don't want to risk missing my connecting flight to Vienna. Has anyone attempted to do anything within a 4 hour time frame? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks. You guys are the best.

4 hours is not near enough time to go into central Rome. In fact, you will find that you'll have minimal down time before your next flight. At a minimum you'll have up to 30-60 minumtes for Immigration, 30 minutes pre-board, and 30 minutes getting to your gate. If luggage is not checked through, you'll be waiting for that. And probably another security check. Find a cafe and sit for an hour or so with some coffee or wine.

I agree with Douglas, 4 hours is definitely not enough time to get out and see Rome. It takes 30 minutes to get from FCO to the center of Rome by cab. That's an hour roundtrip, not counting the time to debark the plane, go through immigration, and back through security. There's always the high chance your flight into Rome is delayed causing your 4 hour cushion to become a 1.5 hour cushion. Play it safe and relax in the airport, planning your next visit to Rome when you can stay awhile.

Not to mention the possibility that your cab might get stuck in traffic. Just chill at FCO and plan for your next visit.
