4 full days in Naples

Hi All,

I wanted to get some thoughts. I'm taking a tour of Southern Italy - 8 days -  Add 4 days in Naples in Feb 2023.
Please note, a tour covers "NAPLES Guided sightseeing includes the Galleria Umberto, Piazza Plebiscito, and the Archaeological Museum.
I have learned that Vesuvius and Herculaneum were quite close to each other, so I think I can tackle them together. So I'm going to buy a Campania Artecard in advance to save time and money during 3 days visits.
https://www.campaniartecard.it/campania-3-days/?lang=en
I have found that "Access to the Vesuvius Great Cone is currently suspended" Probably, climbing Mount Vesuvius won't be available. Here are my schedules:
1, A half day (after the tour end and check-out hotel) I'm heading to Herculaneum
2, A full day to visit the ruins of Pompeii
3, A full day to explore the island of Capri by SNAV hydrofoil.
4, A full day to explore Naples
5, A half day heading to Naples airport for a flight at 4:05 PM
Armed with Pompeii information, I wonder if I could get some info on a day trip to Pompeii. Specifically...is it worthwhile if I book an audio-guided tour? How long does it need to appreciate it?
I really appreciate the advice and general thoughts!

Hi Hang Li -
I'm so pleased that you've set aside an entire day for Pompeii! The excavation is truly vast, and if you've keen interest in the archeology and culture of the place, you'll have yourself an interesting day indeed.

Unfortunately, I've no experience with the audioguides (we did the scavi on our own with a book) but the official website has since published an extensive printed guide, in multiple languages, that you might take a look at ? It's in PDF form so could be downloaded. Here it is in English:

http://pompeiisites.org/wp-content/uploads/A-Guide-to-the-Pompeii-Excavations-2.pdf

From this guide, you could identify the things of greatest interest to you and where they are. As you'll soon see, you won't be able to cover EVERYTHING in a day so you'll need to be somewhat selective! Oh, and if you are arriving through the main entrance (Porta Marina ), you be closest to Regions VII and VIII on the maps in the guide. Might be a place to start your research before your trip?

I can't speak about the audio tour, but based on our visit to the area in 2019, your overall plan looks good.

I found the audio guide for both Pompeii and Herculaneum to be quite good. While you could certainly spend an entire day at Pompeii, the reality is you’ll probably max out within 3-4 hours. You’re going in February, which helps as far as weather and crowds and may help your energy levels. Most of Pompeii’s important excavations are in the “front half” of the site, the amphitheater is long walk to the other end. That’s something to leave until last (or leave off.) There’s a large cafe/rest stop near the forum where you can take a good long break. Still, a whole day here would be hardcore.

If you’re an art fan, the Museo Capidiomonte is worthwhile and is off the beaten path. You’ll have the time. Getting up there and back is probably best achieved with a taxi. Or at least a taxi up and a long exploratory ramble back down.

I thought the Campania card was worthwhile, but I’m guessing admission to the Archeological Museum is included in the tour? And if you’re not using the Circumvesuviana a ton, I’m not sure it’s a great value other than some convenience.

If you like pizza, I highly recommend visiting Gino E Toto Sorbillo. It is michelin star rated and less than 10 euro per pizza. Honestly the best pizza I've ever had in my life

You might have to wait in line but it is super worth it!

Thank you so much for your recommendations!

I aim to visit Pompeii early morning to avoid crowds. I really want to take my time to explore Pompeii as much as I can. MondoGuide Shared Tour offers a Pompeii walk at 11:00 AM. So I don't think I will go on an audio tour.

Kathy already sent me a Guide to the Pompeii Excavations. I will look into it and highlight the major sights to see first. I understand that I won't be able to cover everything in a day. I will be very tired If I spend the whole day exploring Pompeii. I will figure it out!

Yes, admission to the Archeological Museum is included in the tour. The Campania Artecard (32 Euros) will cover admission to the Pompeii (16 Euros) and the Herculaneum (13 Euros) plus unlimited travel by public transportation including the Circumvesuviana. I will find out when I head to the ticket office to purchase the Campania Artecard.
