My wife and I are having a hard time deciding which area to spend an extra day. We currently have in May, a Thurs, Fri, Sat planned in Tuscany(Montalcino). On Sunday drive down to Pompeii and stay in Sorrento (Sunday - Wednesday) then train it back to Rome on Thursday where we fly out Friday. Should we spend 4 days in Tuscany instead of Sorrento exploring more of the Hill towns? or would we be better off using that extra day in Sorrento checking out Paestum, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast?

Both are great. Sorrento is one of my favorite places in Italy, so I think it is definitely worth a stay.

Both are terrific for diff reasons. since you already have Montalcino on your itin. I would then go to Sorrento. Lucky you!!!!

I've stayed in both Montalcino and Sorrento, and did day trips by car from Montalcino in May 2009. Sounds like you'll have 3 full days in Sorrento but possibly less than 3 full days in Montalcino. With so many day trip options by car from Montalcino, I'd spend the extra day there if Thursday is less than a full day. Otherwise, I'd spend the extra day in Sorrento. Both places are terrific, so no matter what you decide, it will be a good choice.

Thanks for the Replies! I think we will stay 2 nights in Montalcino and 2 nights in San Gimangiano or Siena, then drive down to Sorrento for 3 nights. Can't wait!!!!
