4 days in March south of Rome

My wife and I are going on the March 2022 Rome trip and are planning on extending the visit by another 4 days to venture out south of Rome. We have never been to Italy so really looking forward to the trip, checking out the history, the architecture, etc. We want to be sure to visit Pompeii and Vesuvius while we are there, which is why we were focusing on the Naples, Sorrento, Salerno area after Rome. Planning to take the train from Rome and prefer to stay in maybe one or two locales total during our 4 days to cut down on the packing/unpacking process. We are flying out of Naples to come back to the US so don't have to plan a return to Rome. Our kids have done the Amalfi Coast and loved it but we are going to be there from March 19-23 so assume that the typical Amalfi beach and boat ride activities are questionable at best that time of year.

We would love some suggestions on where to go, and how to maximize our time in this area after Rome, seeing the sights, walking/hiking and enjoying the views, and having some delicious southern Italian cuisine. Thanks in advance!

That early in the season Sorrento would be the logical place to stay. Not only is it a transportation hub in that area, but you are more likely to find more hotels, restaurants, and shops open. The towns on the AC will probably be very, very quiet that early in the season.

Definitely too cool for ocean swimming unless you're a fan of polar bear swims. But the cool temps will make for enjoyable hikes or day long touring outside. Pompeii can be a full day - on its own or combined with a visit to the Archeological museum in Naples. Capri, reached by ferry from Sorrento, is also a popular place to visit. The towns along the AC can be reached by bus.

Be sure to pack for cool weather and the possibility of rain. And get a copy of Rick's Italy guidebook for more ideas.

Sorrento makes the most sense

What time is your departure flight? If before noon you might want to stay in Naples night before
Sorrento 3, Naples 1

restaurant and a 10 min cab ride from there to the airport...you can view

Thank you for the quick replies! We will focus on Sorrento and then plan to spend the last night in Naples, as we do have an early flight in the morning. Would appreciate suggestions on activities and tours for the three days beyond visiting Pompeii. Also, is it best to do the museum in Naples before or after going to Pompeii? Or, skip it altogether? And, any suggestions for a place to stay in Sorrento would be great. Thanks again!
