4 days in Abruzzo region - Chieti or Sulmona

My husband and I are flying into Pescara for a long weekend in February and I am trying to figure out the best way to use our time. We won't have a car, so I was thinking of spending one night in Pescara and then 2 nights either in Sulmona or Chieti but I can't decide which? We arrive on the Friday and can get the train to either on the Saturday and then train back on Monday as our flight isn't until the evening. We are happy to mooch and find nice bars and restaurants as well as seeing any historical stuff within the towns. I am aware that there are loads of things to do in the region which would require a car and I am already thinking we will come back with more time and a bigger budget. But for this trip we are looking for relaxing, great food and beautiful views. Any recommendations?

You probably already know that Pescara and Chieti are only 10 minutes apart, although one is seaside and the other is hilltop. Both very nice spots to hang out, eat, visit some very nice small and manageable museums (Pescara: Museum of the People of Abruzzo and Chieti: National Archeological Museum of Abruzzo.)

I'd be tempted to cram all 3 into a sampler weekend, with a promise of more time later. Does the flight arrive Friday morning? Pescara on Friday night, Sulmona on Saturday and Sunday nights, swing by Chieti on your way to Pescara airport on Monday. Without a car, you won't have to worry about all the inland towns you're missing, just enjoy Sulmona and call it a trip.

Alternately, you could swap Sulmona for L'Aquila and check out another small but cool museum, National Museum of Abruzzo. Takes 90 minutes for a leisurely swing through, then stroll the post-earthquake rebuilt historical centre, have a great meal, etc. This would almost complete your provincial-capitals-of-Abruzzo tour (missing only Teramo).

Enjoy your trip!

Edit: happy to offer lodging and restaurant recommendations once you've made your town choices.
