4 adults + kids in Italy for 16 days in October

I know, it's a big undertaking but the kids are all 9-19 and experienced travelers. We start with 3 nights in Rome and end with 2 nights in Venice. Hotels are booked and transportation arranged. We will see Pompeii during the first 4 days and will also tour the Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel.

In between we will stay at a farmhouse near Lucca and have a LONG list of ideas for day trips. I know we can't do it all (list spans from "relaxation day" to day trip to Nice/Monte Carlo and everything between the two extremes. I have looked at maps and drive times vs train (we will have cars for the time near Lucca). With our large group cost is a factor and enjoyable learning is a priority.

To help select our day trips ~ I would appreciate guidance as it pertains to traveling with kids. We already have selected Florence (2), Lucca/Pisa (2), Cinque Terra (1), San Marino/Ravenna (1). This leaves 7 days open and unscheduled. I am wary of planning too much but am on the fence as to how to plan them: Is this already too aggressive? Should we spend more time in the Lucca area? What other stops should we include if any?

Greatly appreciate any and all input!!

I don't have much for you, but we spent 2 nights in Lucca, spending one morning day trip to Pisa, with both afternoons around Lucca. I could have used another day there! Fun to just wander around, ride bikes, and relax!

** San Marino/Ravenna -- each deserve a full day. Also San Leo?

Since you have a place to sleep, and car and trains available, you don't have to have a firm plan for anything, except for Accademia and Uffizi museum reservations in Florence. Note that Google Maps driving times may be considered a bit optimistic and www.viamichelin.com is another good source. I think Ravenna and Nice are both too far to roundtrip in one day. But there are more Tuscan Hill towns within reach and more destinations on the coast, like Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, and the Carrara marble quarry. You could also try a scenic mountain driving day through the Appenino and Apuane park areas.

Thank you for the excellent suggestions!! I will look into each of them and have them in my back pocket as options! Couldn't be more excited for our trip and I'm sure we can't go wrong with any of the choices ~ just have to try for another trip to fit in what we miss!

Don't overestimate distances in Italy. Here are some day trips you might like.

Lucca- San Gimignano 75 miles 1H 45m

Lucca -Volterra 45 miles 1H 40m

Lucca-Greve 62 miles 1H 25m

There may be towns that are not too far apart that you could do 2 in a day. Always go to the most distant first.

Have a great trip!

Hello mamabrio

Since you are staying outside Lucca and enjoyable learning is a priority, I would strongly suggest the Vinci museum. It is a nice drive from Lucca and the town is very small, but beautiful. I think the museum is inspirationable, at least it was for me. There are drawings from Leonardo and engineering students from around the world have built his inventions. Also, as you mentioned the Cinque Terre is great, but you cannot drive there, but to La Spezia and then get either train, ferry and/or walk. Lucca is a great town for families.
