swim,
I think most here have their own preference for which of the five towns to stay in, and my choice is overwhelmingly Monterosso. It's the largest of the five towns and therefore has the greatest number of hotels, restaurants and other tourist amenities. It consists of a "new town" which is where the rail station is located, and an "old town" which can be reached by walking through a short tunnel (the walk will be easy for "active retirees"). There are good hotels and restaurants in both sections, and both have beaches (the new town beach is larger).
You might get some good ideas by having a look at the current Rick Steves Italy guidebook. Many of the accommodations in the other towns are affitacamere (guest houses), some which can only be accessed by stairs. Monterosso has more conventional hotels and some have elevators and provide breakfast.
Given the current crowds that go to that area, it would be prudent to book accommodations well in advance.
I liked the Amalfi Coast more than CT.
