3rd trip to Italy..Need some help planning time/ Itinerary

I booked our 3rd trip to Italy last night and we are very excited! We are flying in to Rome this time(1st time). The plan is to spend time in the Amalfi coast area, using Sorrento as a base (for day trips) and also to spend several nights in Rome. My questions are mostly how to spread our short time. Also, we would not be opposed to going to another town for 2 nights in between, I just don't know where? We have 9 nights on the ground. Landing and departing home from Rome. We are not big on museums but do intend to go to Pompeii/ Herculaneum. We mostly like to stroll the streets, sit in cafes and people watch. We enjoy archeology, the churches, and things that are historically significant. Let me not forget the wine. These things are not in order of importance.. We will be there November 3rd, coming home on the 12th. I read the weather can be iffy at that time of year . .. We were in Venice the last week of October, 2 years ago and the weather was absolutely wonderful during the day. Suggestions are appreciated.

Also, is it better to spend the last night in the city of Rome or at an airport lodging? 1145 AM flight home..

Agree on heading straight to Naples, but I would fly, a lot less schlepping after an overnight flight. You can easily use Naples or Sorrento as a jumping off point for Pompeii/Herculaneum. If you guys are really into history and archaeology, I would give that stuff 2 full days so you can also get to Villa dei Mistrei, Oplontis, Boscoreale and the Archaeology Museum in Naples (I know you said you're not really into museums but all the good stuff from Pompeii is there - especially the porny bits hahaha)

If this is your 3rd trip to Italy you might be annoyed by the high density of Americans and Brits in Sorrento.

Where did you go on your other 2 trips?

I think the airport thing might be up to you - I personally despise getting up early, and an 1145a flight means you need to be there AT LEAST by 945 which means if you stay in Rome you'd need to leave 845-9 or possibly earlier. If you are very early risers, maybe it would be worth it to get a last pastry/espresso breakfast in. Personally I'd sleep in a little later.

sporky, 1st trip we flew in/out Milan. Visited Lake Como, Siena, Florence, Bergamo. 2nd trip, flew in/out Milan ( airfare so much less), trained straight to Verona, then on to Venice before coming back to spend the night at the great Hotel Berna, close to Milano Centrale!

djp, True, it is lovely and oh so convenient to the station. I always loved that every time we were there, Mama was making her appearance on the breakfast scene... I'm sure to see that it was running like clockwork.
