Train Rome to Florence

We are flying into Rome for a nine day stay in Rome and Tuscany. We are planning to go directly to Florence by train the day we arrive from the states. Is it necessary to reserve train tickets in advance?

Julie - The answer to your question is - NO - You don't need a reservation to go up to Florence.
I have a question -You guys aren't spending at least a couple of days in Roma?
And, my second question is - Are you spending the time North In A beautiful Tuscan B&B like Http://www.Casolarelibbiano.it or are you going to stay in the city of Florence all the time and miss the local cafes , Tuscan countryside, and villages, and the total flavor of Tuscany? Daytrips into Florence certainly make perfect sense ; however, as one who has taken groups to Italy for years, I can tell you that 95% of the people I've taken prefer staying in the countryside.

No. Fast trains run every 30 minutes between Rome and Florence (and the trip takes a mere 95 minutes). Take the first available train. You can buy the ticket for the Rome/Florence leg at Fiumicino Airport, but be sure to allow yourself at least 20 minutes connection time at Roma Termini Station upon arrival from the airport on the airporter non-stop train. You buy a separate ticket for the airporter train, which you must "punch" before boarding in the little yellow machine at the track head. At Roma Termini there are many fast food eatiers, including a decent cafeteria above the main ticket windows. There is also a large waiting room where you can rest while waiting for your departing train to Florence.

Greg,

Thanks for the info. We are going in November and spending 4 nights in Tuscany, based in Florence with day trips to the countryside. After that, we are going to Rome for 5 days. We are really excited about the trip. We went to Venice last spring, but this is a new area for us.

Julie - We purchased our tickets the same day of travel from Rome to Florence and it was extremely easy. If you are looking for a place to stay in Florence, check out this apartment. It's terrific and the location ideal for daytrip to the Tuscany Region. http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p420459 We loved it. We also booked a day trip (12 hours) with Walkabout Tours which was great. They took us to Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena, and had lunch at a vineyard - great wine and food. Here's their email reservations@thebestoftuscanytour.com

Julie, as mentioned above, you don't need to worry about the trains either from FCO to Rome Termini or from Rome Termini to Florence. The Leonardo Express runs every 30 minutes and there are 55 trains a day that run from Rome to Florence. Most are high-speeds and many are non-stops. It takes 1hr.40min for the high-speed journey. You do need a seat reservation but again, don't worry. When you buy your ticket, the seat reservation comes with it. You will not be late for any of these two trains. You'll just be early for the next one.

Greg-

Nice plug for the B & B. Do you get a kickback for that?
