We are on a connecting flight from Charlotte to Munich onto Rome (final destination). Does anyone know if we have to go through customs in Munich or do we just go to the gate for the next flight?

You will not go through customs in Munich or claim your bags (you will do this in Rome). You may have to go back through a security scren though, so please ensure that you have adequate layover time to do so. We almost missed our connecting flight to the US a few years ago as the security line in Munich took us over an hour to go through. Hopefully they have fixed the process since then.

Customs is in Rome, but immigration (passport) check is done in Munich. In addition transfer passengers have to go through a complete security screening.

Munich....immigration (Passport Control) and security
Rome--customs (but you can just walk through)
Make sure the airline tags your bag through to Rome and not just Munich--if you're checking bags.
