As far as I can tell there are two ferry lines that make this trip. Does anyone have an opinion as to which one is better? We will be getting a cabin if that makes a difference. Help we leave next week!
Tirrenia has larger and newer ships and better bathrooms. Schedules are about the same between Tirrenia and SNAV.
We took the overnight ferry (2000) from Palermo and arrived Naples @ 0630. getting to Naples that early we decided to take a cab to Pompei where we stored our bags. After seeing the site catching the train to Sorrento was easy.
We used,

and had a cabin. Very nice, no problems.

Janet: since you're leaving next week, you should try to book the cabin on the overnight car ferry as soon as you arrive in Italy, overwise, you risk having to spend the night on a reclining airline-type seat (which is not so bad in itself, except that you may be very tired after a long day in Palermo visiting the many sites).
Tirrenia has bigger and more modern ferries than SNAV, although either company would be acceptable. The ferries actually depart and arrive nearly at the same time; they travel close-by, and sometimes you can see the "other" ship in the night from the outside promenade deck of the ferry you're on.
Both companies offer restaurant, cafeteria, and bar service on board, as well as a cinema and a TV lounge for people who can't sleep.
Once you arrive in Naples, you can proceed to your final destination. I've answered your other questions on your other posting.
