Makes me want to go back!
36 Hours in Rome in the NYTimes today,
sigh
The opening shot was enough to throw me into a blue funk (that I'm stuck in Minnesota).
Doggone it, Laurel!
Feel the same as the two of you. But you know we'll return. Good/bad news, my daughter is moving from Italy after 15 years closer to the states. Two hours from our Florida home. Yep, she's off to the Caribbean !!
I'm still looking at a snow covered farm. Uck.
We head south after Christmas.
Gerri, it's snowing furiously outside right now. :O(
Weather is crazy...we're under tornado warnings.
Article notes two of my own personal hidden gems--Baths of Diocletian next to Termini and then the tomb at St. Constantia and St. Agnese, up on via Nomentana.
After reading this, Roma is really calling me back. Gosh, the week we spent last year February should've been a month. Quiet, workmanlike, offseasonly wonderful. It's like the locals were intimating to us, 'this is how we live when all the tourists have gone away'. Just magnificent.
I just returned from a solo trip to Florence and Rome (my second to Florence and my third to Rome) and this piece came out just after.I enjoyed briliiant weather.
I cannot recommend Hotel Raffaello enough. I love the Monti neighborhood and this was super convenient. I think I paid 197E for two nights using a double room for a solo. Very good breakfast too.
I also used this opportunity to see "new to me" things. Booked a special tour to the Domus Aurea and spent a lot of time at Hadrian's Markets. Both wonderful. I was so happy to see them recommend the National Museum of Rome. The one by the Termini station is marvelous.
Eva, also writing from a dreary day in New York
I'm happy to say that that article in the NYT was written by Seattle author David Laskin, whom I'm proud to call a friend of mine. (We met in an Italian class.) You should check out some of his books as well. He's an outstanding writer. Two of my favorites are "The Long Way Home," about immigrants fighting for the US in WWI and which includes the story of an Italian immigrant, and "The Family: A Journey into the Heart of the 20th Century."

I was happy to see the recommendation for Hotel Raffaello as we just booked 2 nights there. If you have any restaurant recommendations in the neighborhood, we’d love to have them.
