Traveler's Insurance

I am planning my own trip to Italy. Is there a traveler's insurance that covers plane fare and hotels that I book?

Melva,

I think you are talking about Trip Cancellation Insurance, ie something that will reimburse you for airfare and hotels that you prepaid.

Travelguard offers this type of policy. I have never purchased this policy because I'm wary of the restrictions/disclaimers that would allow you to collect on this policy if you did indeed have to cancel a trip. In other words, you can't simply just have a change of heart about going to Europe and get the insurance company to refund your airfare/hotel. There are certain requirements that must be met in order to collect.

If you do decide to purchase this policy, make sure you fully understand the requirements you need to satisfy in order to collect.

Not to confuse you, but Travelguard also offers a Medical/Health Policy. I always purchase this policy.

I personally thing cancellation insurance is expensive and most of the time not needed. However, medical insurance is more reasonable and more worthwhile. Looks at Insuremytrip.com

Great advise Matt. How true it is....READ THE COVERAGE! Ask questions! They usually have a toll free number and agents to advise.

Also look at Access America. You can get a quote online to compare. Also AAA members get a discount..check with your local office.

Insurance is a love/hate thing....hate to pay for it but if you ever need to use it you will be so happy!

Good Luck

We bought Travelguard insurance as we were traveling about the time of the swine flu outbreak and it gave me peace of mind. It asks the cost of your flight so for $95 we got coverage for: accidental death, accident/sickness, baggage & travel doccuments, baggage delay, emergency medical transportation, missed connections, trip cancellation/delay. Again read the coverage (you can read it online) or call them, they are very helpful. I didn't pick up any extra medical coverage as I felt this sufficed for us.

This is a nightmare story about a product sold as "Travel Protection".

Who exactly is protected by Travel Protection

If I was to guess, of the small percentage of "policy" buyers that ultimately file a claim, a significant portion end up receiving nothing or far less than they thought they were entitled to. These "policies" probably all have some sort of "pre-existing" disclaimers.

I'm sure there are some honest operators, but for the most part this seems like a slimy business. Probably way down on the list of the State Attorney Generals / Insurance Commissioners. If they couldn't sniff out the credit default swap apocalypse, then I don't expect them to clean this business up
