33 Anniversary trip to Italy

My husband surprised me with tickets to Rome as a 33 anniversary gift. It’s our first time visiting. My dream trip. Only 7 days. We don’t have anything plan. Not even accommodations. We love art and art history, food and music. We both are musicians. Any suggestions?

7 nights including flights, or 7 nights IN Italy? If the former, then I'd just stay in Rome and maybe add a day trip or 2. If the latter, then perhaps start with 2-3 nights in Florence before spending the rest in Rome. But first get a good guidebook to help figure out what you really want to see and do. When is this trip happening?

Hello mambomusicnow and welcome!

The first and biggest question is when are you going? And second is it 7 nights or 7 days? You should always plan by counting nights rather than days.

With 7 nights I think you should concentrate on 1 or 2 locations and don't try to do too much. Given your stated interests I'm going to say Rome and Florence are probably your best bets. Start by sketching out what days you have and then filling in what you want to see/do during those days and look to pre-book tickets to minimize waiting in line and disappointment.

Something like:
(Fly into Rome)
Rome 3 nights - 2 full days - Vatican Museums, Borghese Gallery, St Peters, Sistine Chapel
Florence 3 nights - 2 full days Academia (David), Uffizi Gallery, Duomo, Bargello
Rome 1 night
(Fly Home)

Florence and Rome are connected by fast trains (~1.5 hours) so travel is pretty straightforward. Once you have your "must sees" mapped out it will help dictate your time. Don't forget to have some downtime to recharge and enjoy the daily pleasures of life in Italy which is a big part of the appeal.

Watch the RS segments and read the articles on Rome and Florence and come on back with questions about tickets, hotels, etc and you will receive a lot of advice.

Hope that helps,

In addition to clarifying how many nights in Italy, WHEN will the trip be?

Thank you for the fast respond. We are going to spend 6 nights and 7 days in Italy. We arrived April 13 and leaving April 19. Then we will spend 20 hrs in Copenhagen. My concern is Easter and the Vatican. Should I fly to Rome and go to Florence first?

We arrived April 13 and leaving April 19.

So you'd have only 5.5 days, tops. I'd spend it all in Rome. There's enough to do there without adding an additional location, although there is the possibility of a day trip to Ostia Antica or Orvieto, if you are interested in either of those. A day trip to Florence is also a possibility if it's a day the sites you most wish to see are open (most Italian State museums are closed on Mondays).

Easter Sunday is April 9th in 2023 so you wouldn't be in Rome during that holiday.

Happy Anniversary! :O)

I spent 4 nights in Rome and it was too much, 3 nights is enough. And spent the rest of the 3 in Florence.
