Traveling by Train

I will be staying in Rome and would like to travel to Venice, Florence, and Milan by train. How long does it take to get to these destinations?

Hi Wendy,

Although most train routes are the same, it can depend on the day and time that you are traveling at as there are some slight variations. The best thing to do is use a good scheduling website like the Trenitalia website, which will show you all the trains and times for the routes.

From Rome, these routes are primarily serviced by the Eurostar Italia (ES) trains, which have a reservation fee on top of the fare charge. If you are purchasing point-to-point tickets, the reservation fee will be included in the ticket charge.

Rome - Florence is about 1:40

Florence - Venice (as the train from Rome to Venice stops in Florence) is about 2:40 - for this route, you want to get off at Venezia S.L. (Santa Lucia station) and not Venezia Mestre, as Mestre is on the mainland.

Rome - Milan is about 3.5 - 4 hours.

If you want to determine any other train travel times between cities that I did not mention, just use the site listed above.

Have a great trip!

As Steven describes, you can actually see the times and fares on www.trentialia.com. Press the English button at the top. At this time, just don't put in a date beyond 6/11 as you won't see much until Trenitalia updates their schedules.
