32 Day Italy Trip - Siena 3 Days

For the third leg of our trip, which is the middle of our trip, we're going to take a bit of a rest in Siena. Here is what we're thinking and would love some ideas:

Day 1 (W): Arrive by train and check in to our AirBNB at 4 pm. No formal plans.

Day 2 (Th): No formal plans, but will either do a self guided walking tour or something with a guide for 2-3 hours at most.

Day 3 (F): Strongly considering a day trip out to Volterra. It looks to be 2 hours each way by bus so my question to everyone is whether that's worth the time invested to get there and back, or better to just stay in Siena?

Day 4 (Sa): Checking out and heading to Sorrento which sounds like it's a heck of a trip by train and bus to get there so we'll probably sleep in and rest up for the trip.

I'm open to any ideas anyone has beyond what's in the RS guidebook. Would love to hear about any markets, restaurants, or tours and things that people loved about Siena. FYI, Tours by Roberto are completely booked on these dates from Siena.

Thanks.

Volterra is interesting, and has a great Etruscan museum. My personal choice would probably be to stay in Sienna; there's so much to see there. But there's that Etruscan museum in Volterra. And the Roman theatre. And the alabaster shop. And some amazing Etruscan walls and gates...

When we were in Sienna a couple of years ago, we didn't make it to Volterra, but did take an interesting day-long wine tour. We found the tour on Anna Piperato's website.
