Lake Garda area

planning a trip in august- I am thinking about 6 days near Portofino 2-3 days on Lake Garda and 6 days in Venice. I had heard that Lake Garda was nice. Anyone have any input about the area including things to do and accomodations?
Thanks

Lake Grada is beautiful. But in August it will be PACKED!!! August is when Europeans (especially Italians) go on vacation. They tend to flock to the lakes, beaches and mountains. Cities (Venice, Florence, Rome, Milian...) will be ghosttowns. If you want to do Garda the northern part may be less packed. Limone sul Garda is beautiful. I had lunch there in November and I wish we could have stayed longer.Riva de Garda is a larger town and may be another option. You may also want to consider a stop in the Dolomites rather than Lake Garda.
Oh and I actually remembered to blog about our trip to north Garda this fall. Just scroll down to Monday Drive: http://michdustviv.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

My friend lives in Bardolino, which is on Lake Garda. He showed us around Bardolino and Peschiera during the evening passaggiata. He suggested we return during the day to see the mountains in the distance; he said the view is amazing! Alas, we didn't have enough time to do that; but what we did see was beautiful nonetheless. Swans gliding on the lake, a great lakeside, underlit boardwalk (blue lights all along the underside of the edge of the boardwalk), nice cafes for gelato and coffee, ancient buildings... wish we could have spent more time there!
