hotels near termini

We are going to be staying in the Amalfi Coast area for our trip but heading back to Rome on the last night to stay so we can catch our flight early the next morning. Ideally, we would like to stay in a hotel near Termini, for mere convenience. Can anyone suggest a hotel that they stayed at? It'd be great if it was walking distance. Also, since this area is supposedly a little dumpier, is it worth paying more by choosing one of the more high end hotels near the station?

I think the area around the Termini is fine and especially the area on the south side towards the Vatican. We have stay in that area four times and the fifth will be in October. The closest hotel we have used (two blocks south of the side door) is Hotel Contilia, also Sonya - about three blocks away and Aberdeen which is 6-8 blocks. We prefer the Sonya because it has a great breakfast. But only slightly better than Aberdeen. For a one night I would use Contilia. All are 3 stars. I don't of any high end hotels near the station.

This is a common question here. Search "Termini" in the window in the upper right for lots more input.

Stephanie, I don't have any suggestions of Hotels in that area, as I stayed in a Hostel. Check the Italy Guidebook as there's several listings for reliable and inexpensive Hotels in that area.

However, a comment on the Termini area - I didn't find the area to be "a little dumpier" at all. It's busy at times, but quite a nice area IMO and I never felt unsafe walking about even at night.

It is definitely a convenient area for transportation access!

Happy travels!

we stayed at Eurostars Palace. 5 blocks form Termini (easy with rolling luggage) and then easy 15 minute walk to Colosseum or Trevi. Rooms were OK--bathroom excellent. Nice front desk, free internet in lobby, great buffet breakfast.

Last Sept 2008, we paid 200 Euros for 1 night--not cheap, but not awful--and the location between Termini and Colosseum was excellent. Also, we walked back at 10 PM from dinner 7 blocks away (from Trevi side) and felt very safe.
I did not care for the area near Termini---5 blocks made a big difference, IMHO. Elaine

I stayed in hostels around Termini and didn't have any problems. You will find a lot of street sellers in taht areas from Pakistani or Afrikans. But they are not trouble. I walked around Termini several times at night without any problems. It might look dump, but judge a book by its cover.
To me paying for hotel room is not worth it. I mostly travel alone and pay about 20-30 euroes per night in a hostel. Paying 100 Euros per night to sleep in a hotel? Not worth at all. However I like the atmosphear in a hostel ebacsue there are many people from different countries. I enjoy talking to them.
