30 Mar - 01 Apr 2017

My husband and I just moved to Italy 2 months ago. We live near Pisa and have travelled to Florence, Lucca, and the Leaning Tower thus far.

Info about us: My husband does not do well with crowds. I love castles, architecture, cathedrals, and gardens. He tolerates them if they aren't overly crowded.

We are looking for a fun and unique getaway or local experience for the weekend of 30 Mar - 01 Apr. I initially thought Rome, but the Rome Marathon is happening that weekend. So now are starting over from scratch. Any suggestions?

Also, I have heard there are some amazing flower gardens in Italy. Does anyone have any info on the locations or what time of year is best to go?

Thanks,
K

I like Frascati, close to Roma. Gardens of the villa are open to the public (check schedule).

I also like Bolsena, not for gardens but for the volcanic crater lake. Nice castle, too, and the best gelato in Italy (therefore in the world) at an artigianal shop on Via Santa Cristina. Nice weekend getaway.

I was very surprised and pleased at how uncrowded Ravenna was on a Sunday in mid-July 2015. It was really inexplicable, but perhaps Ravenna gets a lot fewer tourists since it's not on a major rail line. The historic district is lovely and the mosaics are not to be believed. But weatherwise, a more southern destination would probably be better at this time of year
