Hello! We are planning a 3 week trip to Italy in May 2020 with family (10 of us ranging in age from 9- 70years old). We were hoping to book air bnbs but didn't want to be packing up every few days so were thinking a home base for 7 nights to explore the north flying into Milan, 7 nights at a base central to Rome & surrounds and lastly a home base to explore 7 nights on the Amalfi Coast. Is this a wise move and can anyone give me some advice? TiA
We once did a one month trip with 4 bases, each for about a week, and loved it. We did Venice, Spello in Umbria, Sorrento and Rome. You could do Venice, Florence, Rome or Florence, Sorrento, Rome, for example. No car needed unless you want to tour the Tuscan countryside. If so, I’d base in an agriturismo in that case as a vehicle in Florence is a nightmare.
Some would say a week Venice is too long, but there are several day trips you can take like Verona, Padova, the lagoon islands, and so on.
3 one-week stays is a great way to approach this. You can settle in, get oriented, maybe do some cooking to save a little money.
FYI, I would not base in Milano. An alternative to Venice, though is Bologna. Great location for day trips, but IMO not as charming as Venice.
