My husband and I are planning a 20 day trip to Italy. We fly into Vencie and out of Rome. Had planned as follows;
2 nights Venice then to CT for 3 nights, 1 nt Lucca, 2 nt Florence then to Montalcion or Montepulciano for 4 nt. then to Sorrento - 3 nt then Rome 4nts. Any suggestions or changes to this routing? We plan to rent a car while in the Tuscany region.
Looks like a nice trip! The only suggestion I'd make is do Lucca as a day trip from Florence. Packing up, finding the new hotel, checking in, and getting your stuff set up all takes time. You'd be trading off being in Lucca at nite (admittedly nice) with some extra time to sightsee instead of lug your belongings around.
Also be careful about picking up the car in Florence, since they have a ZTL restricted-traffic zone that has given many people here expensive tickets. If getting the car there, be sure the company is outside the zone and you know how to depart and drop the car off without going into the ZTL. A search on this forum or on the web will give you more info about ZTL.
Pam,
Just a matter of preference but I don't like long travel days if I can help it. I would go venice to Florence to cinque terre to Lucca to Siena (Pick up the car).

I agree with 3 nights in Florence w/day trip to Lucca. You don't mention Pisa at all. If you haven't been there, it's an easy 4-hour or less stop on the train from CT to Florence. You might consider trading out your time in Lucca for the Pisa stop.
