3 week in Italy. Late March through early April

My husband and I are planning a retirement vacation. We have spent a lot of time in Tuscany and Rome. We would like to spend 3 days in Venice the head down to Southern Italy on both coasts. Does anyone have recommendations as to where to book ourselves for one week at a time where we can do day trips? I plan on doing VRBO and would appreciate hotel recommendations for Venice. Thank you!

I really like Puglia. Since I was using public transportation I stayed in the baroque city of Lecce. If you'll have a rental car, you'll probably prefer to stay in a smaller town. I know this subject has come up before, and suggestions have been offered, but I'm afraid I don't remember what towns have been suggested. You'd certainly want to see the trulli in Alberobello and the cave homes in Matera (just over the regional boundary in Basilicata), but there are many other great destinations.

You could spend the rest of your time over in the area of the Amalfi Coast.

For the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento has the best connections - ferry to Capri, train to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, and buses to Positano, Amalfi, etc. If the ferries aren't running yet, and you want to spend your time hiking and wandering the AC towns, it would probably be better to stay in one of them. It depends on what you want to see and do . . . and whether you want to drive a car there (not the easiest place, I'm told).
