I'm looking for a 3 star hotel in Stresa...not necessary to stay on the Lake but within walking distance, and hotels in Orta San Giulio area. Planning on mid September 2011, grazie.

FWIW, the star system in Italy has more to do with what facilities are offered (elevator, 24 hr front desk, etc.), than how nice a place is. Many 2 star places are a lot nicer than some 3 stars.

I'm aware of the italian star system for hotels ... and am open to 2 stars depending on a few personal likes, thanks.

In Orta, the Santa Catarina has large, clean rooms with garden views. It is not on the lake but rather across the highway from the Sacre Monte. It has huge complimentary breakfast buffets. It also has gated parking. It's about a 10 minute walk along the lake to the middle of town. In the middle of Orta San Giulio are a few classic pensiones right on the town square and the lake. You have to park outside town, though. They seem very nice, but from another era. The restaurants are fantastic, though.
