Hello...heading out for our first Italy trip with husband a 2 adult kids in their early 20's--they are not party kids but we are history buffs and foodies and looking forward to relaxing in between our crazy itinerary. We have 3 hotel options...there March 30 (arriving Sorrento at noon), 31 (day trip to Capri) and April 1 (day trip to Positano). We have not had any trouble choosing hotels for our trip except in Sorrento...can anyone give us their opinion if you know any of these 3? Grand Hotel President (up on hill...a few minutes drive via shuttle or taxi to central area but beautiful views, nice restaurant and many decks), Residenza Il Campanille (right in the heart of town near a beautiful historic church nice rooms and ambiance but no real decks to chill and watch the view), Hotel Cristina (very nice and quaint up on hill as well but not quite as nice views or accommodations as Grand Hotel however a much straighter shot and shorter via shuttle or taxi). I am basing this all on pics and reviews but maybe you can weigh in if you have had some experience? My husband wants to stay up on hill w the views and I am leaning towards being central...
We had our 20+ children with us when we stayed 4 nights at Plaza Sorrento. We loved the location, rooftop views, and amazing breakfast buffet. It’s not on your list but thought I’d mention it. Enjoy your travels!

The other place with a "view" is the five luxury hotels on the in-town cliffside, overlooking the gulf of Naples, and Vesuvius. Their elevators go down to the water level where they have swimming platforms and usually, a bar. Our host Rick once called the Grand Hotel Ambasciatori "a worthwhile splurge." We spent five nights there, paying extra for a full balcony and a Vesuvius view. Needed the icy air conditioning, even in May. Some ferry horn noise, but also one night of fireworks.
Have you checked the off-season ferry schedule? Some hillside hotels host a lot of bus tours.
Taxis in Sorrento are known to be outrageously expensive and I would not want to rely on hotel shuttles
For those reasons alone, I would stay in the center or at least an easy short walk
