1). Two good places to eat that are appropriate with a preteen child in casual attire, per favore?
2). Bus or taxi to civita d. Bag.? (From Orvieto). There are 3 of us. I am well aware of the 1/2 mile bridge and look forward to it.
3). Due to the many tourists - is it better to haul food in our backpack into Civita d. B? Or, is it better to just buy food inside of Civita d. B? I read that the crowds make getting food a chore in Civita.
barb,
A few thoughts......
- There are lots of restaurants in Orvieto, so you'll have choices. Ask your hotel staff for recommendations. In Civita di Bagnoregio, there are a few smaller places offering food, but for a proper "sit down" restaurant I'd suggest Antico Forno. I don't think they'll be too concerned about the attire of your child.
- Taxi from Orvieto to Civita would be horrendoulsy expensive. The usual method is to take the Cotral Bus from Orvieto to Bagnoregio, and then the small shuttle from there to the base of the bridge at Civita. You would need to verify the times so that you don't miss the last bus back to Orvieto. Details in the guidebook.
- Why would you need to haul food in a backpack into Civita? The crowds may be thick in the main part of the day, but I'm sure there will be a gap when you can get a meal (unless something has changed since my last visit). Again, details in the guidebook.
Thank you. I read about hauling food in an online article. Information can be conflicting. I thought Civita was closer to Orvieto. I will take the bus system. Is Antico Forno in Civita itself or on the other side of the footbridge in Bagnoregio?
barb,
The end of the footbridge is about a mile from Bagnoregio.
Regarding the location of Antico Forno, Civita is comprised of buildings around the outside of the town, and a central Piazza on the inside. Antico Forno faces the Piazza (there's also a B&B upstairs from the restaurant). In the top picture of the website, Antico Forno is in the building on the left side......

The Etruscan Church is the building straight ahead in the centre of the picture.
Thanks! I know where my family and I are eating. Looks great!
