We will be finishing RS Village Italy Tour, ending at Lake Orta (1 nite there with tour). We then have 4 nights before our flight home. (Spending 5th night in Milan before early flight.)
Should we spend another nite in Orta? Enough to do for another day?
Thinking of going to Varenna for our base & hopping around as we want.
Any thoughts?
Where are you flying out of? Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Milan Linate (LIN)?
Malpensa is very close to lake Maggiore (and lake Orta). I would move from Lake Orta to Stresa (20-30 min away), and stay all your available nights there before flying home. You can reach MXP from Stresa in 3 ways:
1. By private car transfer/taxi (40 min)
2. By Bus Shuttle (55 min)
3. By Train to Gallarate, then taxi from Gallarate to the airport (25 min + 15 taxi)
If you want to see Milan, you can visit it on a day trip from Stresa. There are 2+ trains every hour that connect Stresa to Milan, and the train trip is only 60-75 min each way.
If you fly out of LIN, then Varenna might make more sense.
We are intending to spend time @ Lake Como for those days. Had not thought of Stressa.
My 1st question is .. should we spend an extra day at Lake Orta? That would be 2 nts total.
Too much time there?
If we did an extra day in Orta (2 nights total), we would have 3 nights at Lake Como .
Does 3 nts sound like too much at Lake Como
(possibly based in Varenna)?
We spent 2 nights in Varenna
Never had a moment to sit and twiddle my thumbs wondering what to do.
3 nights is NOT too much
For the early morning flight, I would suggest staying near the airport, rather than Milan proper
