3 nights on the Amalfi Coast

Hello, On another thread I had asked about staying in Naples for 3 nights (with day trips to Pompei and Capri) and Sorrento for 3 nights as a base to visit the Amalfi Coast. The consensus of responses was that I divide the nights between Naples or Sorrento and spend 3 nights in Amalfi coast town(s) so I wouldn't have to visit them as day trips. We are pretty active and would enjoy a hike or two, spending a morning or afternoon at a beach, and simply walking around and appreciating the towns/views/food. I'd be grateful for any feedback you have on the following ideas and if I'm leaving anything big out.
Day 1: ferry to Positano. Spend day exploring Positano, visiting beach. Night in Positano or Praiano (is it easy getting from one to the other? I would love to hear thoughts about which is the better option)
Day 2 morning ferry to to Amalfi - Positano to Amalfi, path of gods back to Positano/Praiano for the night.
Day 3 - Find a morning bus to Ravello, explore Ravello spend the night there
Day 4 - Make way from Ravello to Vientri (is there time to visit Minori or Maori on the way?. From Vientri take the Train/bus to Naples and then catch the overnight ferry to Palermo

Thank you again for sharing your experience and insights.

Skip Path of the Gods. If you had more time you could justify it, but frankly it was my only Amalfi Coast regret. It’s a big investment of time and energy that will eat one of your only two days there. The views from Ravello are basically what you see on the trail. IMO, Path of the Gods popularity is a branding success story. If it was called “Trail #5” no one would talk about it. I would use this day to see Maiori, Minori or Praiano at your leisure.

Is Vientri a logistical or sightseeing choice? I think the simpler solution is probably Salerno instead, which will have both ferry and bus connections from Amalfi. There’s regular bus service between Amalfi and Ravello, which is basically straight uphill from Amalfi. And Amalfi connections go everywhere. Salerno is kind of everyone’s sleeper town. It’s clean, with a sort of old world resort class and charm. Regular bus/train service to Naples from there. The train station is just a few blocks walk from the ferry docks.

Also, not to throw another element at you, but it’s entirely possible to see Capri en route to Positano. Get the early ferry to Capri, there’s places you can check your bags at the port. Get yourself a late afternoon ticket onward to Positano and you’re set. It’s not materially different than a standard day trip.

After taking the morning ferry to Amalfi and having time there, I would take the City Sightseeing bus from Amalfi to Ravello to avoid backtracking. This is a beautiful area and the views from the ferry are spectacular. You will enjoy it.

Note that ferries to/from Praiano are few and far between, and not from all locations.

City Sightseeing/Coast to Coast buses haven't serviced the Amalfi Coast for a number of years; since before COVID or thereabouts, I believe.

In addition to SITA buses there appears to be a shuttle service between Amalfi and Ravello. I have no personal experience with it, and it may be experimental but here's the website:

Choosing between Positano and Praiano, I vote Positano for the more frequent ferries.

I liked my day on the coast on the Path of the Gods, but if you want your day to be "wandering around and seeing things", it is a rough day to do that. We barely saw Amalfi (I mean, we did the duomo and went to my leather guy near the paper museum) and then got REAL squished on a bus to Bomerano, hiked for 3 hours and got SO tired and gave up in Nocelle and got on a bus to Positano, and then basically made a beeline through Positano to the ferry to get back to Salerno......we didn't see much, we accomplished the feat though! The views were pretty, but I agree that Ravello would be more of a "wandering around and seeing things" day. If you can, I would hop on a bus to Ravello as soon as you get to Amalfi so you can beat the bus crowds, especially coming down. THEN visit Amalfi.

The most pleasant way to get to Naples from Ravello is a bus to Amalfi and the ferry to Salerno (I'm not sure I know what Vientri is, are you speaking of Vietri? It would be a SLOW train to Naples, way easier to travel to Salerno to get a fast train) and it probably gets you there faster.

Spend day exploring Positano, visiting beach.

I found Positano overwhelmingly underwhelming. It's worth an hour then move on. Because transportation is such a hassle asking the coast, I'd be hesitant to change hotels. My choice for an overnight stay would be Amalfi because of the transportation options to go elsewhere. We wanted to do the Path of the Gods but decided it was too much effort to get to the starting point. We ended up doing a shorter walk called the Path of the Lemons between Minori and Maiori. A big "yes" to Ravello, it was our favourite location along the AC with incredible views.

Agreed Allan, Positano isn't much unless you want to stay in a fancy hotel with a great view and relax by the pool.....I bet somewhere up in the terraced buildings must be SOME good restaurants that aren't overrun with tourists......
