I am staying at Casa di Sara (thanks Rick) in the Dorsoduro district. I am traveling solo and would appreciate your favorite cafes and neighborhoods that are away from the maddening crowds! Grazie!
We did a walking food/wine tour through the Jewish Ghetto that was great! Learn a little history, meet some new friends, and enjoy good food and wine. I'd also recommend just getting lost in the maze of alleyways and stop at any little hole in the wall café you find.
"Via Guiseppe Garibaldi" in Castello is usually a nice, quiet street with "normal" (i.e. not primarily for tourists) shops. I like to visit it at least once each time I am in Venice. Last time we stayed in an apartment and did most of our shopping in the Coop.
In the Dorsoduro district, we enjoyed both Campo San Barnaba and Campo Santa Margherita. San Barnaba is the smaller of the two, with a couple of cafes we frequented for aperitivi and snacks. There was a small musical group performing on the Campo when we were there, very enjoyable. Santa Margherita has several cafes. We enjoyed Margaret DuChamps for drinks and panini. It was a great spot for people watching too. Buon viaggio!
reupsgt - Do you have the name of the food and wine tour that you did? We will be in Venice in a few weeks and that sounds fun!
