Planning for May 2023 and wonder after spending the night in Agrigento we will heading to Villa Romana which is about a 2 hour drive, visiting the sight 1 + hour then another 2 hours to Ragusa. Total 5 hours and probably stop for lunch 1 hour, so arrival in Ragusa would be aprrox 3-4 . Therefore to see Ragusa would leave the balance of the day. Next day we had planned a day exploring the small towns of Modica, Scicli and Donnalucata and surrounding area. Two days does not seem enough time.
Has anyone done this in 2 days.
Also on the way to Suracusa we would like to stop in at Noto and possibly Avola so later arrival in Siracusa - So should I add the day here? Or would a day and a half be sufficient for Siracusa.
I visited Modica and Ragusa in the same day and did not feel rushed, but did not try to add Scicli or Donnalucata. I would still keep it at 2 nights (even if it means not making it to Donnalucata) because Syracuse is really a lovely place and deserves 3 nights.
By the way, Noto is great, but why Avola? For the wine?
On our first trip to Sicily we spent 5 nights in Ortigia (our favorite town). We hired a driver through our B&B host for a day trip to the lovely Baroque towns of Noto, Ragusa & Modica & sites along the way. I can’t comment on Avola. Ortigia just clicked with me. It was magical.
Sicily was the end of a Southern Italy Tour. We spent 2 nights in Taormina as well. We were scheduled to return to Sicily in 2020 for a month and were planning a return to Ortigia. Of course canceled due to Pandemic. IMHO I wouldn’t short change Siracusa. Walkable town, historic sites and wonderful cuisine.
Enjoy your planning. ;)
This seems really rushed.
Re:Villa Romana. You wrote 1+ hours. To take it in and enjoy it, plan on at least 2 hours.
Next day seems too much to do 3 towns. Part of the fun of visiting is taking time to sit in a piazza or a cafe and take it all in. Or in one of the baroque churches and not rush. Or slow passiagiata ( evening walk). Remember each town you visit means driving/looking for parking/navigating.
BYW: We loved the chocolate in Modica ( went to the place in Rick Steve’s book).
Siracusa: Of course the amphitheater and museum, we walked all around and it took most of the day. Another day there to walk around ORTIGIA and again, take time to sit at a cafe and enjoy.
Or if it’s warm, go for a swim.
I have traveled in Italy many times and always encourage anyone who asks to Slow Down.
