My friends were in Naples 37 yrs ago and they say its an impoverished town and we shouldn't stay there for 3 nights for safety reasons?? Things have changed in 37 yrs am i correct. We want to go to Pompeii and other sites from there. Any comments,
Stay in Sorrento. Sorrento is the perfect home base for exploring the region. Although, Naples is worth a day trip from Sorrento to check out the sites. You will enjoy your southern Italy experience much more if you stay in Sorrento.
3 nights in Naples sounds like 2nd prize in a contest, with the winner only required to spend 2 nights in Naples! lol. Seriously, the past 37 years have not helped Naples one iota. Try to stay elsewhere and visit for 1 day, at most.
One more vote for Sorrento. It's the perfect home base for that area. Others will disagree, but IMO the only don't-miss in Naples is the National Archeological Museum, which is fantastic.
Sounds like a prize from "The Newlyweds Game". Stay in Sorrento and day trip from there. LOL!
Stay in Sorrento and visit Naples. It's not that Naples is horrid (though parts of it are); it's just that Sorrento is much, much more pleasant. A few years ago we decided to save money by staying in Naples. We ended up commuting into Sorrento each day, just to get out of there.
I feel like I'm dogpiling this one, but...
Stay in Sorrento -- visit Naples.
(I've stayed in both -- learned my lesson...)
Yes, things have changed in 37 years. Naples has gotten more dangerous.
We were in Sorrento for 4 nights (2006) and loved it! Were here when Italy won the World Cup and what excitment that was. We did daytrips to Pompeii, Positano and Capri and drove right by Naples coming and going. I know the Arch. Museum is supposed to be amazing but we really had no desire to go to Naples. We loved the energy in Sorrento and would stay here again.
