3 nights in Florence - Side trip

Hello,

We are traveling for three nights to Florence, arriving on a Sunday morning from Rome. We will have a Firenze pass, and plan to do most of our intra-Florence sightseeing on Sunday and Tuesday. We are interested in seeing another site on Monday (since many on the popular sites are closed.) We like to hike and, as we are spending most of our trip in cities, are looking for scenery. We are considering half/full day trips to either Cinque Terre or towards smaller towns and wineries in the Tuscan countryside. We will be using public transit exclusively.

Would love to hear others opinions on either of these options (or others). Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

Check opening days for museums, several are open on Monday and closed on Tuesday.

I like Arezzo or Siena for cities near Firenze, but I am not a hiker so I'm not sure what might suit you. They are hilly!

Try to do the Chianti or San Gimignano, there are many buses going there. Check upon arrival in Florence in the bus station near railway station Santa Maria Novella, the place is in a street, down the staircase of Santa Maria Novella station. You can stop and decide where you want to walk. Landscape is beautiful.

The buses going to Greve in Chianti, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, are those you need to check.
If you do not want to go so far,
You can also go to Fiesole.

If you enjoy hiking then I would recommend Cinque Terre. Last summer I did a day-trip from Florence using a tour company, but that didn't give us much time to hike. I would take the train from Florence to La Spezia and then La Spezia to one of the five villages. Going on your own will give you plenty of time to hike and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. This will most likely take the full day since its takes a few hours to get there from Florence.

Thank you for the replies! As I mentioned, we will arrive Sunday morning and we depart Wednesday morning. I'm a little hesitant to do a full day side trip, as we will be buying the Firenze pass and would like to take advantage of it as much as possible. I love the idea of Cinque Terre but am wondering if its worth sacrificing the full day. Any thoughts?

Another option that I'm considering is traveling by bus towards San Gimignano and getting off at San Casciano in Val di Pesa and touring the winery with lunch at Principi Corsini. Any one done this or have any tips in this area? We're really looking for a more rural experience and great views and opportunities to walk in the Tuscan hills.

Any thoughts and/or recommendations are much appreciated. Thanks again!

See the March 21 posting titled Florence to Cinque Terre for some good information on train options for that side trip. I prefer the south-to-north Cinque Terre hike, starting in Corniglia and hiking to Monterosso with a stop in Vernazza to explore and eat lunch.
