Hello,
We are staying in the Dolomites for 3 nights this autumn and are undecided about where to stay. We want to see the museum in Bolzano and do some light walks and ride lifts. We are thinking either 2 nights in Castelrotto and the 3rd night in Bolzano to be closer to the train out . . . Or 3 nights in Castelrotto or Ortisei.
There are great comments about Ortisei on this site but I wonder if it's too much of a schlep for only 3 nights.
Any thoughts are appreciated!
Ortisei is only an hour by bus from Bolzano. It is much lovelier than either Castelrotto or Bolzano and is actually in the mountains with the best walks, lifts, and views. The museum is interesting but if the weather is good, I would stick with outdoor activities. Perhaps you can take an afternoon train from Bolzano when you depart and see the museum in the morning that day. There is a luggage check at the station.
Both Castelrotto and Ortisei are amazing, if you want a more secluded town and a place from where you can walk to the dolomites, and be close to the alpe di siusi. But Ortisei is a much bigger town and is better connected to transport, and is very beautiful too. Both places are very well connected because of the buses there and the Dolomiti Card covers all the transport expenses.
the Dolomiti Card covers all the transport expenses
In the Val Gardena you lodging will issue you a mobility card good for bus transport for your entire stay and day of departure, so the bus back to Bolzano is covered. For lift transport, I recommend the Val Gardena Card https://www.valgardena.it/en/summer-holidays-dolomites/mobility/gardena-card/.
The DolomitiSuperSummer Card does not cover the Val Gardena lifts. It does cover the gondola from Siusi to the Alpe di Siusi which you have to pay for separately if you have a Val Gardena Card.
