3 nights at Lake Garda?

Hi there,

(New Question)
Looking at taking ferry up lake to Malcesine, do I need to purchase tickets in advance for a specific departure time, or can I plan to arrive at ferry terminal early enough to purchase on site?

My husband and I have planned 3 nights at Lake Garda and have booked at Hotel Luna Rosa, Malcesine. From there, we travel to Rome via three modes; taxi, train, train. Assuming all transfers are successful it will be a 5-6 hour day of travel and arrive Rome around 17:30. I am wondering with only two full days at Lake Garda, am I making this more difficult than we have time for, would I be better off booking a place closer to the south end and reducing the stress of making timely transfer in order to get to Rome. I was fairly excited to stay at Malcesine based on comments I’ve read on this forum. Thoughts? And if you would stay closer to South End, where might you recommend?

My last two trips to Italy over the last year, the trains were late 99,% of the time making for a longer wait and travel times and missed connections.

I guess the answer depends on what you are wanting to do & see at Lake Garda. The drive from Malcesine must be around an hour or so. The faster trains with no connections leave currently twice a day (9a, 5p). But that is possibly seasonal. I'd say weigh your decision on your Garda agenda and how early you are willing to depart on your day of travel. Grabbing the trains with the least connections is always my choice!

I'd still stay in Malcesine.

Why do you need to transfer trains? There is a Frecciarossa train with no changes from Verona Porta Nuova to Roma Termini which departs at 2:52pm and gets you to Rome at 6:10pm.

I'm sure you can make that train in Verona coming from Malcesine, with any means of transportation you use, especially a taxi. That would be my choice. Going straight to Verona from Malcesine is the fastest choice. There is a bus that goes there (change in Garda) or a taxi can take you there directly.

There are at least 20 other train choices throughout the day, two fast ones in the morning, around 9 am (8:52 and 9:37), also with no changes, all others require one change at Padova or Bologna, but still very doable.

Ok perfect. This is exactly the type of feedback I am seeking. Seems unanimous Malcesine it is!

We had wonderful stays in Malcesine and Saló on Lake Garda. Enjoy your time there!

I guess it would be prudent at this point to inquire about recommended activities for the 2 full days we are there. We want to take the gondola up to the summit at Malcesine and are wanting to take the ferry to explore the lake, perhaps rent bicycles for the trail along the lake if it exists in the Malcesine area.
