we are going on a RS tour to Venice, Florence and Rome, we added 3 nights at the end of the trip to go to Sorrento. I'm wondering if we need to make train reservation early before our trip, or if one or 2 days before our day of travel is ok. If we choose to stop in in Pompeii before we get to Sorrento is it safe to leave our bags at the Pompeii luggage area? Out of Sorrento we were thinking of seeing the Amalfi coast, Pompeii and Capri and Anacapri. Any ideas or suggestions? We are leaving in mid may, cant wait! Oh also, we will be flying out of Naples is there bus transportation from the train station to the airport? Any favorite restaurants in these areas? Thanks for any input. Nancy
You should have no problems booking the train from Rome to Naples a few days ahead. I believe you can book from any station. We found some 2 for 1 and 20% off tickets a few days in advance for the fastest connection. The left luggage area at Pompeii seems secure - have used it twice with no problems. When you go to Capri buy your tickets early - we went down to the port thinking we could buy tickets for the next boat and they were sold out for several hours and it was not high season. One of our best experiences on Capri was doing a short hike to a place for lunch recommended in the 1000 Places to See book. We rented a car and drove the Amalfi Coast a few times and had a great time. If you have time, go to the Archealogical Museum in Naples and to one of Rick's recommended pizza places. We checked our luggage at the station, went to the museum, did the Spaccanapoli walk and ended with a pizza lunch. We didn't have time to go to Pompeii on the way down, but went from Sorrento one morning to beat the heat. Have fun!
Thanks Julie, that was great information, I will be sure to buy those tickets to Capri in advance, glad to hear that you had no problems with leaving your luggage in Pompeii. Do you recall the restaurants name in Capri, I do not have that book. Thanks again, Nancy
The restaurant was La Fontelina. It was about a 30 minute walk from the top of the funicular and mostly downhill. It's a casual place but our hotel in Sorrento made a reservation for us. We spent most of the afternoon relaxing over lunch and then took the little boat over to the Marina Piccolo and the bus back up to town so we didn't have to hike back up the hill.
