3-day stopover in London UK in July 2010

We are going to a wedding in July and are going from Vancouver BC to Italy (we are open to the airports in Pisa, Forence, or Rome) mid July 2010. We would like to stop in London UK (about 3 days) on the way back to visit our daughter. It seems that this about doubles the cost of our flight. Is there any way we can stopover without it costing so much?

We always stop in London for three days on our way home from Rome. We have looked into flying open jaw but as you said it about doubles your fare. We fly into london on nwa or Delta and fly to Rome on Ilitia. And the same coming back. Our luggage is only checked to London and we have to get our luggage, change air lines and sometimes terminals in London. But it is not that hard and much cheaper.

I've done something similar several times (although from DC). Price out the following two options and see if either is cheaper than a stopover:

1)A multi-city ticket ("open jaws") Vancouver to Italy and then London to Vancouver. Then price a separate one-way ticket from Italy (whichever city you prefer)to London .

2) Check a round trip Vancouver to London. Then check a round trip London to Italy. If you buy separate tickets, I would make sure to stay at least one night in London on your way to Italy (just in case flight is delayed) and then one or more nights on the way back. Sometimes it is significantly cheaper to fly to London than to Italy.
