3 day post-cruise tour

We are taking a Med cruise roundtrip from Rome and want to visit Florence and Venice after our cruise. My thought was to take a train from Rome to Florence, sightsee and spend the night, then take a train to Venice the next day, sightsee and spend the night there and either fly home from Venice, or return to Rome for flight. Will this work out okay? We're a family of four with two teenagers and are quite used to doing things on our own. Any suggestions?

Your proposed itinerary will be rushed but is technically feasible (barely). Most travelers on this forum give Florence a minimum of 2 nights and Venice an absolute minimum of 2 nights. You probably don't want to use up a day training back to Rome, so flying out of Venice conserves time. It's a pity you don't have a little more time, both Florence and Venice merit more than one night and a partial day, especially with you paying all that money (for high speed train fares for four) just to have a partial day in each place.

Truthfully I would focus on Florence and save Venice for another trip. And come home from Rome or Milan.

Yes, I had the same thought. I've been to both Venice and Florence, but my kids have not. Florence is definitely the priority. Our ship gets in on a Monday (in July) and though I haven't booked the flights yet, we'll likely return on Saturday, so we might be able to do two days in each spot.
