3.5 weeks in Puglia and Sicily itinerary advice

Hi all. Planning our first trip to Italy and thought about focusing on the Puglia region and ending with a week in Sicily. Hoping to get some feedback on the itinerary. It'll be two of us for most of the trip (we're meeting two friends for a week in Sicily at the end), and it's our first time in the country. We're trying to travel at a bit of a chill pace.

Dates: May 22 (landing in Bari) – June 14 (flying out of Palermo)

Puglia

May 22: Land in Bari evening of May 22, sleep near airport. Pick up car the next day

May 23–29 - Cisternino
Drive to Cisternino area and stay for 5-6 nights, using it as a base to then make day trips to:

  • Locorotond
  • Ostuni
  • Alberobello
  • Martina Franca

May 29 – June 1 (3 nights)- Monopoli
Walking about the area, day trip to Polignano

June 1 – June 5 - Lecce
Using as a base for:
Lecce itself, Otranto day trip, maybe Gallipoli or beaches

June 5- Transition to Sicily by flight from Bari to Catania (a bit unsure here)
Drive Lecce to Bari
Return car
Stay 1 night in Bari and fly out on June 5, or drive there the same day and catch a flight.

Goal was to avoid a stressful traffic/airport day, so arriving in Bari a day early and flying out the next day. But not sure if this is necessary.

Sicily

June 6 – June 10 (4 nights) Ortigia (Siracusa)
Base in Ortigia.
June 10 – June 14 (4 nights) Palermo
Drive to Palermo.
Palermo itself + Cefalù day trip.
Fly home June 14.

Some questions:

car rental
I'm planning to rent cars in both regions. Is it better to book online ahead of time or just grab something at the airport? I can drive manual.

transitioning to Sicily
Does it make sense to route back to Bari and overnight before flying to Sicily? Or just drive in and fly same day? I heard about flying from Brindisi, as it would be closer to Lecce, but the flights have stopovers.

pacing and locations
Does the flow make sense? I'm trying to minimize the amount of times we check in and check out of accommodations, and the time spent on the road. I'm also not sure how many days to spend in each location, or if I should be avoiding some places and checking out others (such as Matera)

Appreciate your perspectives! thank you.

Looks good at first glance.

Do not understand the listings of "masseria" from 'Cisternino

Beautiful beach near Lecce: Torre dell' Orso.

Not necessary to spend the night before the flight in Bari UNLESS you have a very early morning flight OR you want to see Bari. I spent the night in Fasano before an 11am flight (I think) out of Bari a few months ago. Rented from SIXT, and their drop-off location is only a few steps from the departure area of the terminal. No paperwork to fill in on return..just drop the keys and walk to terminal entrance.

Fly out of Bari if flights are better.

Major omission is Matera, if you've not already been. Could be last overnight before heading to Bari airport. (I like to spend 3 nights when I visit but if you can't do that, at least go for a night..)

Thank you @ekscrunchy - very helpful! Edited the original post to fix that error. Matera does look great, would you say I should look to stay in the area or a day trip is enough?

Interesting itinerary. Similar ground as we covered in 2024. How did you develop your plan?

The flow looks ok, but I am not too sure how and why you developed your time allocations. 9 days for your travels based in Cisternino and Monopoli seems to come at the expense of Sicily. (Matera makes sense as a day trip from your Cisternino base, as you will have your rental car, then.)

We spent just 24 hours in Bari, which you are skipping by, and I felt that visit was a little too brief, in hindsight. Take a look at what Bari has to offer in terms of its medieval core, at least, and the city that grew around that in the 18th to early 20th C.

When we planned our trip, I was told by others on this forum that Sicily deserved at least two weeks. There’s a lot of Sicily that your itinerary misses. But then, one can never do it all.

When we flew from Catania to Bari, all I found involved flying through Rome. Sounds like you’ve found better flight connections. .

Of course, we all travel different ways. We did the RS Sicily tour, then Puglia largely by a “self guided” e-bike trip that included eight of the towns that you list, plus added non-bike time in Bari and Lecce.

We were in Sicily about 12 days and about 11 more in Puglia. Plus 6 more to - and in - Naples. FWIW and for comparison, our 2024 TR is at https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/southern-italy-30-days-three-ways-to-travel

Without a doubt, stay at least one night in Matera.

All of the hotels have arrangements for parking; they handle this in various ways..shuttle to parking lot; valet service that will drive your car to the lot and park for you, etc.

If you can change the arrival in Cisternino, you could fly into Bari and take the bus directly from the airport to Matera. This is only about an hour's ride and it eliminates the issue of parking in Matera. Then you stay in Matera one or two nights, take the bus back to Bari airport, and head to one of the rental car desks located in the arrivals area. From there, continue on to Cisternino.

Matera is unlike any other city in the world and I think it would be a mistake to miss it....and it's magical at night, that's why I'd recommend staying at least one night there, if not two..

You could condense the Monopoli and Cisternino stays into one location; Monopoli is only about a half an hour's drive from Cisternino.

Did you already book the Cisternino hotel??

Hi! This is all super helpful.

@Fred - Re: Sicily, we'll be meeting up with some friends in Catania who will be flying in for that week, so I could visit a few days earlier, but the plan was to meet at the airport together and venture off. Your trip review looks great, I will give it a read! I came up with this itinerary just by googling to be honest, I know very little about the region and it will be my first time in the country.

@ekscrunchy - Thanks for the Matera tips. I wasn't aware of the bus from Bari, and that sounds like a splendid idea. Maybe I will incorporate two nights in Matera, and at least a full day or two in Bari. I have not booked any accommodations just yet so I am very flexible. Point taken about condensing Monopoli and Cisternino.

Any thoughts on where I should cut back on other cities to make more time for Matera?

Thank you

I hate to say it because I love these places, but for the sake of a couple nights in Matera I think you could double up on some of your day trips from Cisternino and Monopoli --- all of the towns you mention are very close together and you can visit one before and one after lunch.

Definitely concur with the idea to go to Matera and stay a night or two. Matera has some amazing lodging options; be sure to stay in a cave (modernized) there. And I also enjoyed the experience of staying in a trullo a couple of times in Puglia.

Your plans are much less moving lodging locations than I do, but I do encourage you to enjoy a location both inland and at the coast as lodging stays. I’m not necessarily saying these two, but Polignano a Mare in the twisty lane old center and Alberobello filled with trulli are both places that have a completely different wonderful vibe in the evenings & early mornings before the day trip people arrive.
